One of my favorite authors/illustrators is Brain Selznick. His artwork has captured our imaginations for years.

Though he did the illustrations for Frindle, the first time that I remember registering his name in my mind as “brilliant illustrator” was in his book The Houdini Box. Nephew friend Seth was really into magic and Houdini. He carried this book around with him everywhere so I had a lot of occasions to steal a peak at it.

The book that mesmerized us and captured our hearts was The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Part novel, part picture book, and part “movie’ we were enthralled with the places Brain took us. Yes we’re on a first name basis.

While in New York City this past Spring, at Book Expo America, I had the opportunity to meet Brian Selznick and learn a little bit more about his process.

It is extensive and each morsel of his books are written and designed over and over again until they are ready for us to see them. His newest release Wonderstruck, out just a few days ago, is another incredible magical journey ,this time set in New York. We’ll be reviewing it here very soon. I’m just waiting for the paint to dry on a couple of projects.

The books in this giveaway are Boy with a 1000 Faces, Walt Whitman Words for America by Barbara Kerley (illustrated by Brain), The Houdini Box, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, and Wonderstruck. We are so happy to be honoring Brian Selznick this month and giving away these great books.
