As part of our Natural Nester At Home Summer Nature Camp book jumps we’re jumping into a wonderful tale about a very endearing inch worm in the book Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni.

Leo Lionni, an internationally known designer, illustrator, and graphic artist, was born in Holland and lived in Italy until he came to the United States in 1939. He was the recipient of the 1984 American Institute of Graphic Arts Gold Medal and was honored posthumously in 2007 with the Society of Illustrators’ Lifetime Achievement Award. His picture books are distinguished by their enduring moral themes, graphic simplicity and brilliant use of collage, and include four Caldecott Honor Books: Inch by Inch, Frederick, Swimmy, and Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse. Hailed as “a master of the simple fable” by the Chicago Tribune, he died in 1999 at the age of 89.-Amazon

Inch by Inch

Our winsome friend the inch worm is such a talent.

Inch worm

He can measure anything under the sun, from a robin’s tail,

a toucans’ beak, a hummingbird,…

…and many more ultimate measures. But when a nightingale threatens to eat him before breakfast unless he can measure her song, the inch worm’s wit saves the day and his life.

A simple colorful story which will be read again and again. Get your copy of Inch by Inch HERE.

Something To Do:

Let’s Make an Inch Worm

  • Scissors
  • Foam Sheets in various colors
  • Hole Puncher
  • colored pipe cleaners
  • very small pom-poms for the head
  • small wiggly eyes
  1.  Cut the foam into 1/2 inch strips.
  2. Fold the strip back and forth into an accordion fold.
  3. Punch a hole through each square of the foam sheet. I punched a hole individually and lined it up best that I could.
  4.  Thread the pipe cleaner through the holes.                               IMG_1429
  5. Fold pipe stem cleaner up on each end to keep the foam pieces folded. Fold the tail end over and  Cut off the excess as needed.
  6. Glue on pom-poms to one end , holding until almost dry.
  7. Glue on the eyes onto the pom-pom ball.

  1. I love this book, but that inch worm is so creative. The toe caterpillar is adorable. Great to keep for a child’s room to hang on the wall.

  2. Great activities, But out of many reviews, you were the only one that mention wit, thank you for really reading the book.
